The UK Economy - 'Darling is Everything OK?

Dennis Turner, Chief Economist for HSBC presented his view on the UK's current state of economic affairs at a breakfast briefing on Wednesday 15th October 2008 at the Courthouse Hotel in London's West End.

Dennis provided a fascinating economic insight into the current crisis surrounding the credit crunch and what the future holds. The following is a brief summary highlighting the key messages from Dennis' speech.

Things will be tough for many, but there are reasons to be optimistic; inflation and interest rates are set to fall significantly, which will mean cheaper goods, cheaper borrowing and cheaper servicing of debt (there’s a mountain of that to clear up) - all good news for consumers and businesses.

Aside from the issues in the banking world, the economic framework is essentially ok and the UK economy should emerge stronger after a period of correction. Confidence levels are crucial though.

Dennis’s Top Tips

For a daily update on the prospects of the economy look no further than :

  • Price of Oil (barrel)
  • Libor rate (the rate at which banks lend to each other)

Falls in both are extremely good news (and they have started to fall).
